Introducing Stop In Your Tracks: A powerful new secondary school program from Youth Choices
Boredom. Risk-taking. Peer pressure. For many young people, these every day challenges can lead to choices that carry serious consequences.
That’s the story at the heart of Stop In Your Tracks, a brand new Youth Choices program developed in partnership with Arc Infrastructure, the manager of the freight rail network in Western Australia.
The program begins with the screening of a short film, following four friends – Jack, Brook, Ellie, and Liam. Bored after school, and losing interest in the day to day, they stumble into a dangerous game: playing chicken with a train. What starts as harmless fun quickly escalates into something far more serious, opening up critical conversations about risk taking behaviours in young people, as well as safety around railways.
Stop In Your Tracks doesn’t end with storytelling. Using interactive Forum Theatre techniques, facilitators transform students from passive viewers into active participants, or spect-actors. Students replay real-life scenarios, examining the role of peer pressure in their lives, and explore how external influences shape their decision-making.
Through guided, empathy-driven collaboration and discussion, Youth Choices facilitators empower students to unpack risks, think critically, and begin identifying safer pathways. Every choice a young person makes has the power to shape their future, and sometimes, the futures of those around them. As with all Youth Choices in-school programs, Stop In Your Tracks creates a safe space to explore tough topics, build resilience, and develop strategies for real world challenges.
