Local members of Perth’s African community performed in an interactive theatre showcase at The Rise in Maylands last Saturday. The performance explored real-life experiences of racism and its impact on mental health.

Performers, Wilson, Alex, Jo, Anet and Tinsae, encouraged an open community dialogue by inviting members of the audience to join in the scenes to role-play ideas and potential solutions.

This program was facilitated by Constable Care Foundation’s Youth Choices team and Diversity Focus.

“Interactive theatre is a great tool to encourage empathy. It allows people to imagine themselves in other’s shoes and decide what kind of community they want to build,” said Constable Care Foundation CEO David Gribble.

“This group of young people included many first-time actors, who worked hard to bring this insightful piece of theatre to the stage.”

This program is supported by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Safer Communities Fund and the WA Police Force, in partnership with Diversity Focus.
