National Reconciliation Week at the Safety School

Road safety, protective behaviours and a big dash of fun were on the menu for students from Moorditj Noongar Community College and Southwell Primary School as they visited Constable Care Safety School for a special National Reconciliation Week event!

Beginning with a Welcome to Country by Whadjuk Noongar Elder Brett Collard, students took in lifesaving cyclist and pedestrian safety skills at the experiential learning centre in Maylands, before settling in to enjoy a performance of popular Constable Care puppet show, Fun Scary.

Southwell Primary School Deputy Principal Dana Beinke said the experience provided meaningful, hands-on learning that reinforced key safety messages in a fun and memorable way.

“A particular highlight was the puppet show, which the students are still talking about! They found it both entertaining and memorable, and it tied in beautifully with our current Health curriculum focus,” Ms Beinke said.

“The way important messages about safety and wellbeing were communicated through humour and storytelling really helped reinforce the learning in a meaningful way.”

The Fun Scary puppet show, which is designed to teach protective behaviours to young children in an engaging and non-threatening way, co-starred Constable Care Foundation Yued Noongar performer Jessie Ward.

“I’m so chuffed with Constable Care Foundation for making the effort and bringing National Reconciliation Week into the workplace,” Ms Ward said.

“Actually doing something, as opposed to just talking about it, and building that bridge and listening is such an important step forwards.”

Constable Care Foundation Chief Executive Ian Anstee said the organisation was committed to its Reconciliation Action Plan and hoped to make the NRW Safety School session an annual event.

“At Constable Care Foundation, we have strong beliefs in honouring culture, community, connection and healing,” Mr Anstee said.

“Throughout the entire year and in everything we do, we aim to foster respectful relationships and understanding between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.”
